Old Exchange Building
Notice the Revolutionary War drummer on the front steps. He really
enjoys his job. In 1783 when Charles Town incorporated as the City
of Charleston, this building was the City Hall as well as the customs offices.
In 1818 the city sod the building to the federal government, and
it was used as the Post Office until 1896. In 1898 it was occupied
by the U.S. Light House Service. When a developer wanted to buy the
site for a gas station in 1912, the DAR was successful in petitioning the
building as an historic memorial. |
